Cohiba Cuban Cigars

In 1492, during Columbus' first voyage to the "new world", he visited the island of Cuba. His sailors were introduced to "Cohiba" by the island natives, a bunch of dried leaves that were smoked in a pipe called a "Tobacco".

In 1982, three types of Cohiba Cuban cigars were introduced to non-diplomats: the Lanceros, the Coronas Especiales and the Panatelas. Three more vitoles were added to the brand in 1989: the Esplйndidos, the Robustos and the Exquisitos, completing what is known as "La Lнnea Clasica". Five more vitoles were added in 1992 creating the "Linea 1492": the Siglo I, II, III, IV and V. Cohiba remains the “King of the Cubans”. Only the finest tobacco leaves are used to create the various types of Cohiba cigars.

The Cohiba Brand produces a variety of different Cohiba line and sizes.  Here is a list of most of the Cohiba's that are currently available:

The Cohiba Esplendido

Size: 7" x 47 (178 x 18.65 mm) Cuban churchill size

Description:  The Esplendido is the size most commonly called a Churchill.  Because it is a long cigar measuring 7 inches, it tends to be smooth at the beginning and becomes bolder as it smokes down, perfect to smoke after a large meal and with a nice single malt scotch.  The Cohiba Espledido can take up to an hour and a half to smoke, so make sure you have time and don't rush, sit back and enjoy.

The Cohiba Robusto

Size: 4 7/8" x 50 (124 x 19.84 mm) Cuban Robusto, a robusto or rothschild

Description: One of the best constructed Cuban robustos, the Cohiba Robusto burns evenly, has an easy draw, and the 50 ring gauge allows for plenty of smoke.   You can taste a woodiness and a bit of clove flavor in this creamy almost chocolatey cigar.

The Cohiba Corona Especial

Size: 6" x 38 (152 x 15.08 mm) Cuban Laguito No. 2, a panetela

The Cohiba Corona Especial smokes fairly full-bodied compared to most Especiale #2 sizes, but it is a thinner cigar which allows for less smoke on each draw, making it less intense than some of the other Cohibas.  It seems that with some age this cigar tends to lighten up and become woodier.

The Cohiba Lancero

Size: 7 1/2" x 38 (192 x 15.08 mm) Laguito No. 1, a long panetela

This Cohiba has a very earthy aroma.  The Lancero seems to appeal to both experienced cigar aficionados as a mid-day cigar, while also tempting the novice with the allure of the Cohiba flavor.  You can still taste the wood and spice that are present in other Cohibas such as the Cohiba Robusto, but in a much subtler way.

The Cohiba Piramides

Size: 6 1/8" x 52 (156 x 20.64 mm) Cuban Pirámide, a pyramid or torpedo

The Cohiba Piramid is only produced as an Edicion Limitada, first in 2001, and more recently in 2006.  It tends to get enthusiastic reactions from seasoned smokers who like the facts that it tastes different than most Cohibas, due to the extra aging process of the Edicion Limitadas.  Perfectly constructed with a very full flavor, this cigar is best paired with a peaty single malt scotch.

The Cohiba Siglo Series

The Cohiba Siglo I

Size: 4" x 40 (102 x 15.87 mm) Cuban Perla, a tres petit corona

The Siglo I is a quick, half hour smoke with a great deal of flavor, cinnamon and chocolate notes throughout.  The draw is fast, so you get a lot of smoke from this small Cuban cigar.

The Cohiba Siglo II

Size: 5 1/8" x 42 (129 x 16.67 mm) Mareva, a petit corona

A great mid-day Cohiba, the Siglo II can be enjoyed with a mellow coffee, or even a smoother scotch.  The wrapper is exquisitely smooth, and usually lighter in color.  You may find some complex flavors that will have your palette constantly surprised.

The Cohiba Siglo III

Size: 6 1/8" x 42 (155 x 16.67 mm) Cuban Corona Grande, a long corona

Cohiba Siglo III's are an elegant size and shape.  Quite often the wrapper of this Cohiba is very oily, a testament to the quality of the tobacco.  With hints of Vanilla and espresso, this cigars has a bold Cuban flavor.

The Cohiba Siglo IV

Size: 5 5/8" x 46 (143 x 18.26 mm) Cuban Corona Gorda, a corona gorda

Much regarded as the heaviest of the Siglo line, the siglo IV is stout corona gorda with a great draw.  The full-bodied smoke is meant for experienced cigar lovers, and it makes for the perfect after steak Cuban.

The Cohiba Siglo V

Size: 6 3/4" x 43 (170 x 17.07 mm) Cuban Dalia, a lonsdale

Many people buy this Cigar and lay it down for a few years.  It only gets richer and more complex with time.  This Cohiba tends to grow more complex and punchy as you move into the second half of the cigar.  This cigar is a serious commitment and needs some time to thoroughly enjoy. (every moment is worth it)

The Cohiba Siglo VI

Size: 5 7/8" x 52 (150 x 20.64 mm) Cuban Cañonazo, a toro

The newest of the Siglo Line, the Siglo VI was made to satisfy the appetite for the smoker who longs for a big cigar.  With its hefty length and ring gauge, the Siglo VI packs a punch that includes a strong flavor of dark chocolate and nutmeg.

The Cohiba Cohiba Maduro 5

The Cohiba Genios

Size: 5 1/2 x 52 (140 X 20.64 mm) Cuban Estupendos, a robusto extra

If you are looking for a full-flavored Cuban cigar, the new Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios is 2007/08's best.  From its initial release the Genios was being heralded as a return to greatness for the Cohiba brand.  The dark wrapper is a pleasure to admire and the burn is perfect.

The Cohiba Magico

Size: 4 1/2" x 52 (115 x 20.64 mm) Magicos, a robusto or rothschild

The Magico tastes much like the Genios and smokes similar as well.  It is the same thickness but shorter which allows you to get all the flavor of this new Maduro line but in under 1 hour.

The Cohiba Secretos

4 1/2" x 40 (110 x 15.87 mm) Cuban Reyes, a tres petit corona

Because of it's thinner ring gauge, the Secretos smokes less intense than both the Genios, and the Magicos.  The Secretos is well paired with a lighter meal, or as a simple dessert cigar.
