Cohiba Habanos Collection for 2008

Havana, the birth place of Cuban cigars and where only the best Cuban cigars are still made, has just released a press release stating that 2008 is going to be the year of the Cohiba. What does that mean for you? Habanos (Havana) has chosen the Sublimes Extra as the shape and size for the Cohiba Habanos collection. The case, just like the previous ones, will resemble a book, and will be No.8 in this Special Series.

This 'book case' will contain 20 Sublimes Extra (girth 54 and 184 mm long). Besides the fact that Cohiba is the only brand that undergo's three levels of fermentation, the size selected also symbolizes the greatness of this phenomenal brand. Only a 1000 of these cases will be released. Even the case is going to be made by skilled Cuban craftsmen.

Look out for this collector's item later this year, they will be very exclusive and only available to dealers authorized by Havana House.

2008 Limited Edition on the way!
Havana, April 2008: It's true, the Montecristo Sublimes , Cuaba Pirámides and Partagás Serie D No 5, are chosen as the limited editions and will be out for your consumption by the end of the year. It is also the first time that the Cuaba is having the "Limited Edition" status bestowed upon it for the first time.

The Montecristo Sublimes (Also included) were first presented in 2004 as Limited Edition in the Cohiba brand. This time, it brings back all the fun and excitement. Partagas Serie D No 5 is the smallest of the bunch but packs a powerful punch says Habanos. Sounds like Porsche 911 to me.

Since 2000, Habanos s.a. has been releasing Limited Editions within the most prestigious brands such as Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Partagás, Hoyo de Monterrey and H.Upmann. When Habanos decides to release these Limited Editions, they contain sizes not included in the regular packaging of these brands.

Also a distinguished wrapper, that is aged for two years is used in preparing the cigar. Don't forget the Binder and Filler leaves are aged for just as long too. Keep an eye on this one as these are going to be distributed in very limited quantities.

Cuba's new Cohiba Maduro 5 Magico

Last year Cuba released their first official Maduro wrapped cigars with the Cohiba Maduro 5 Line.  Included were 3 sizes the Genios 5 1/2" x 52, the Magicos 4 1/2" x 52, and the Secretos 4 3/8" x 40.

I just smoked my first of the Magicos, and it was a great treat.  Because it is a shorter cigar, the commitment was only about 45 minutes, and I could have smoked two back-to-back.  The flavor was like the traditional Cohiba's but with a little more intensity and a strong dark chocolatiness.  I smoked it in the afternoon and it definately left me with a little buzz, could have also been the 6 shot Americano that I drank while smoking it.  It went really well with the coffee, and I would guess that a nice red wine, maybe a Merlot would pair well also.

The burn was a little slow, which I attribute to the thick, durable wrapper.  The construction of the Magico was obviously reserved for only the most talented of Master Cuban rollers, because it burned the most evenly out of any cigar that I have had in the last six months.

Overall, the Cohiba Maduro 5 Magico was a full-bodied, well-rolled Cuban masterpiece.

Vegas Robaina - A tiny brand with Big Flavor
Vegas Robaina may not be a Cuban cigar brand that you hear about quite often, it is not one of the top 5 most talked about including Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo Y Julieta, Partagas and Hoyo de Monterrey.  This however is how this brand has maintain such a strong reputation amongst the select cigar aficionados that do know and love the brand.

Because Vegas Robaina is not as high in demand as Cohiba, and Montecristo because of marketing, each cigar produced by this company has extra attention paid to its construction, resulting in some of the most perfectly hand-rolled Cuban cigars.  The brand boasts a modest five sizes:  Classicos, Familiars, Famosos, Unicos, and Don Alejandros, whereas brands like Romeo Y Julieta produce upwards of 30 sizes.  These five cigars represent the classic sizes of Lonsdale, Corona, Robusto, Piramide, and Double Corona, each one hand-rolled to perfection, not losing any quality due to a too high demand.

The flavor of the Vegas Robaina brand mimicks that of Montecristo, generally speaking.  They are medium bodied cigars with flavors of cedar and cinnamon.  As is normal, the larger ring gauges tend to provide a thicker flavor with more smoke being drawn from the cigar.
